PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island lawmakers are considering a bill that would require suicide prevention training for public school personnel.
The bill would require school districts to adopt suicide prevention policies and train personnel in suicide awareness and prevention annually.
Rep. Terri Cortvriend, Sen. James Seveney and Sen. Dawn Euer are trying to build support for it.
It’s named after Nathan Bruno, a Portsmouth High School student who took his life last year. Cortvriend, a Democrat, was chairwoman of the Portsmouth School Committee at the time.
Bruno’s friends approached the lawmakers with ideas that led to the legislation.
Cortvriend says kids need support from the adults in their lives and this bill strives to ensure the adults they see daily at school are ready to connect them to help when they need it.
