Prosecutors are reportedly getting close to linking former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez to a 2012 unsolved double murder in Boston’s South End.

A source close to the investigation says a grand jury is hearing evidence on the case. Two men were shot to death at the intersection of Shawmut and Herald Streets in July 2012. One of the men had just moved to the United States.

After the shooting, police said they were looking for a grey SUV with Rhode Island license plates that may have been involved. The rented SUV Boston Police had been looking for was located at Hernandez’s uncle’s house in Bristol, Conn. in late June. The vehicle was then towed back to Boston to be processed by local police.

Hernandez is being held on no bail in connection with the death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has a probably cause hearing set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in that case.

Sources said Hernandez may have been upset that Lloyd was talking about the South End murders with other people the night the two were in a Boston nightclub together, just 48 hours before Lloyd was killed.

7News has reached out to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office on the South End murders and are awaiting a response.
