The Drug Enforcement Administration is encouraging New England residents to take advantage of the national drug “take-back day.”

The public can dispose of expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications at more than 600 collection sites across the region on Saturday.

The U.S. attorney for Maine, Halsey Frank, said the program is “an integral part of controlling the diversion of prescription drugs into the wrong hands.”

More than 40 tons of prescription medications were collected on the last “take-back day” in October. Maine led New England states with more than 27 tons.
