A man was thrown from his car and engulfed in flames after an explosion at a New York gas station.

Dramatic surveillance video showed the moment the man was thrown from his car and had his clothing ignite in flames.

He began rolling on the ground, and was able to put the flames out.

Police said the man had just put a gas can in the trunk of his car.

“It’s very scary, I try to tell people to be careful and some don’t want to listen,” storeowner Salem Nagi said.

Neighbor ricky nelson heard a loud popping sound, but thought it was gunfire.

“What caused that?” Nelson said. “I didn’t know, that was my first time hearing it. We live right up the street. I’m sorry for the guy.”

Nelson was filling a gas tank at a Sunoco station when he found out about the incident.

“Since I heard this it would make me think I’m walking down the street in the heat with a can and it might explode,” Nelson said.

Nagi said he’s glad no one else was hurt.

“I hope everybody takes their time and be safe around the pumps you know,” he said. “This is very dangerous.”
