MERRIMACK, N.H. (WHDH) - A Merrimack High School teacher was arrested Monday after police said he sent explicit photos and videos to one of his students.

Robert Todd Wiley, 63, allegedly sent explicit photos and videos of himself to a 16-year-old girl who was in his philosophy class. Police believe Wiley started sending the photos and videos to her last year and even asked her to send nude pictures of herself to him.

Police said they were notified by the girl’s mother, who found inappropriate images, photos and text messages from Wiley.

Parents and students said Wiley, who taught at the school for 37 years, was very popular among his students. He turned in his resignation Monday.

Wiley faces several charges, including endangering the welfare of a child.

Police have encouraged anyone with information to contact police at 603-424-3774.

The Superintendent of Schools released a statement Monday afternoon:

The District is saddened by the news that one of our staff has been charged with this conduct.  Our students are our primary concern and we do not tolerate or condone this behavior.  We want to assure the community that we have cooperated fully with the police who is handling this investigation.  We have communicated with families and will be working with our staff to provide counseling services to students who may need it.

I can inform you that the teacher has chosen to retire effective Oct 13 and that will be accepted by the Board on Monday Oct 17.   Due to the need to respect the privacy of the student and the fact that this is an ongoing criminal matter, I cannot share any other information at this time.
