As millions of Americans mark the unofficial start to summer this Memorial Day weekend, forecasters are keeping an eye on a low pressure system off the coast of Georgia.
They say it could become Tropical Storm Bonnie and put a soggy damper on barbecues and pool parties across the Southeast.
“Everybody along the southeast coast from Georgia through the Carolinas should watch the progress of this system very closely, and whether in fact maybe you should modify your weekend plans to take into account the prospect of severe weather along the eastern coast,” warns NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan.
NOAA and the National Weather Service say this will likely be a “near normal” hurricane season, which technically begins June 1st, and they’re urging Americans to be ready.
“We know it only takes one, and the sooner you prepare obviously the more ready you will be in case a storm threatens,” says NOAA hurricane specialist Dr. Gerry Bell.
Researchers predict a total of ten to 16 named storms, with say four to eight becoming hurricanes, and up to four of those will be Category Three or higher with winds exceeding 111 miles per hour.
