Police in Northboro are warning parents of an online threat targeting middle school children.

Police received a report of some suspicious activity on Instagram.

According to police, someone tried to follow local school children on their Instagram accounts and the students who followed that person got an unwelcome surprise.

Up to 50 Northboro middle schoolers were asked to follow an account called "MMS 6th grade," thinking it stood for Melican Middle School, their school.

When one girl followed the account, she showed her mom what she found.

"She went on that link there was pornographic images," Lt. William Lyver, of the Northborough Police, said.

That mom reported it to police, who in turn immediately warned other parents.

Officers told parents to see what their kids are doing on social media and who their friends are.

In the meantime, detectives have launched an investigation to find out who the account belongs to, taking is very seriously not just because of the pornographic photos but because of what they could lead to.

"If someone tries to attempt contact or lure them into sending pictures of themselves, then those images are out on the internet," Lt. Lyver said. "No good things can happen out of that."
