NORWELL, Mass. (WHDH) – A 15-year-old is facing serious charges after he allegedly set off an explosion so powerful that it shook nearby homes.
Police said that the teen made the device and set it off in his backyard. They also said that he had several more devices stored in a shed.
The state police bomb squad arrived at the home and took one of the devices for a controlled detonation.
Norwell Fire Chief Andrew Reardon said the teen was very lucky that nobody was injured.
“In my conversation with the state police, I learned that these devices were very dangerous. Had they gone off, someone would have been either seriously injured or killed,” Reardon said.
Neighbors said that the teen filmed the explosion and the aftermath with his cell phone.
The suspect was arraigned in Hingham District Court. Officials said the teen was ordered held pending a dangerous necessary hearing at a later date.
