GREENWOOD, Ind. (WHDH) – A critical care nurse was rewarded for his actions after he rescued a fellow shopper at a supermarket in Indiana.
Marcus Guajardo said he was waiting in line at the checkout when he saw several employees rush over to help a shopper who collapsed. The man had gone into cardiac arrest. Guajardo abandoned his shopping cart at the checkout and rushed to the man’s side.
“He had already turned a shade of blue,” said Guajardo. “I could tell he wasn’t breathing.” Guajardo started chest compressions and after a few minutes, the man started breathing again. Paramedics then arrived and took the man to the hospital.
The supermarket manager bagged Guajardo’s groceries and told him they were paid for. Guajardo was also presented with a $25 gift card to the supermarket.
Two days later, Guajardo was back at work and learned the man he helped save was not only recovering at his hospital but staying on his floor. The two reconnected and Guajardo said the man got teary-eyed as he thanked him for saving his life.
“His wife stood up from the bench and she got real emotional and she gave me a very long hug,” said Guajardo. “They were very gracious and very thankful.”
Guajardo credits his wife for him saving the man’s life, saying he would have left the supermarket earlier if she had not reminded him to buy diapers.
