WAREHAM, Mass. (WHDH) — An off duty officer happened to be driving by a cove in Onset when he saw a man struggling in the water. The deputy jumped into action, got in the water and pulled the man to shore.
Mary Graf saw the rescue. An off duty sheriff's deputy happened to be driving by Muddy Cove in Onset, stopped and jumped in the water to save a man.
“I was shaking, I could feel myself shaking,” said witness Mary Graf.
It happened around 10 Saturday morning. Firefighters and EMTs showed up and helped pull them to shore.
“He was probably 50-75 feet from shore originally. He had started to make his way in towards shore,” said Deputy Jeffrey Osswald, Wareham Fire Department.
“They kept rolling him over, I think trying to pump the water out of his lungs, rolling him back and doing more CPR,” Graf said.
The victim, a man in his 50s, was rushed to a nearby hospital and then flown to Boston.
Firefighters and witnesses said the first man that jumped in the water to rescue the victim, didn’t think twice about making the critical move.
“It could have been tragic. A lot of people turn a cheek to helping and he did it without hesitation, he went into the water,” Osswald said.
“There are a lot of nice guys out there and he's definitely one of them,” said Graf.
The victim’s vitals were stabilized before he was transported to a Boston hospital.
