CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (WHDH) - A tragic scene occurred in New York City Saturday, after an MIT student was killed when an SUV flew off the road.

Investigators reported the driver was an off-duty police officer, and said the officer was drunk at the time.

Andrew “Drew” Esquivel was a senior at MIT, and was in New York City for a summer internship at a tech company when he was tragically killed.

Esquivel was standing on the sidewalk with friends early Saturday morning when the SUV lost control and hit all four people, killing the 21-year-old and injuring his two other  friends from MIT.

Eyewitnesses described the chaos and the gruesome scene.

Esquivel’ friends said he had a lot of potential and so much life ahead of him.

He was a beloved brother of Lambda Chi Alpha, a member of the wrestling club.

Esquivel, a California native, was majoring in Urban Design and Planning.

Friends said he will be greatly missed.

The off-duty police officer who was behind the wheel was arrested.

Police said he refused to take a breathalyzer at the scene.

He was arraigned over the weekend and was released after posting $300,000 bail.
