Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was on hand Wednesday to begin a project next to the TD Garden.
The project will be called the "The Hub on Causeway."
The new development will include residential and office space, as well as a supermarket, restaurants, a movie theater, and a garage for more parking.
The first phase is set to be completed in late 2018.
It will also include a new underground connection from the North Station Commuter Rail to the Orange and Green MBTA lines.
