A Louisiana Department of Corrections official says an intense manhunt is underway for a man convicted of manslaughter who was accidentally released from prison.

Pam Laborde said authorities are looking for Benjuiel Johnson.

Johnson was released from Dixon Correctional Institute on Sept. 23 after finishing his time there and handed over to another jurisdiction where he was wanted on a separate crime and then eventually released.

But Laborde said before he was released from Dixon the person processing his paperwork should have noticed red flags on his rap sheet about a crime in Iberville parish and called there for more details.

If the official had called, they would have discovered that Johnson was convicted of manslaughter there in 2013.
