NEWBURYPORT, MASS. (WHDH) - Officials said improperly discarded smoking materials in a bed of mulch ignited a fire that broke out at a Newburyport bagel shop last week.

Investigators said they found improperly discarded cigarettes in the parking lot.

The fire started around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday at the bagel shop on Liberty Street.

Firefighters said the flames started in the back of the bagel shop and then spread to other parts of the three-story building that also houses a pizzeria and bakery.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling that fire.
