CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) — Officials returned Friday to the scene of a large fire that destroyed at least one home Thursday in Charlestown.

Twenty-four hours after a devastating fire ripped through a Charlestown neighborhood, firefighters still searched for a cause.
Thursday afternoon, flames sparked at a multi-million dollar brownstone on Bunker Hill Street.

The fire started in the back of the home on the ground floor and quickly spread to many other buildings on the block.

Five firefighters were hurt in the blaze.

The heat and intense smoke and flames were a lot for firefighters to handle.

At one point, a “mayday” was called when the fire escalated quickly and two firefighters were unaccounted for. Officials said they were found within minutes.

Nine families were displaced by the fire.

Officials said one building is a total loss and a second building suffered what could be a multi-million dollar loss.

The Boston Fire Commissioner said they are not ruling out any causes of the fire at this time.
