WAREHAM, Mass. (WHDH) — One person remains unaccounted for after a house fire in Wareham Thursday, though no bodies were found in the rubble.

The fire broke out at around 3 a.m., quickly ripping through the home on Restful Lane. Wareham’s fire chief said they received nearly a dozen 911 calls on the fire.

“It woke me up because it was popping the windows and I didn’t know what was going on,” said neighbor Jeffrey Lukan. “The flames were as high as the trees.”

When crews arrived, they could not go inside due to the dangerous conditions, forcing them to fight the fire from the outside.

“We have to pull it down because I have to make sure they’re safe. I have to do what we can to make it as safe as possible for them to go inside,” said acting Wareham Fire Chief Patrick Haskell.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials are asking for the public’s help on any information about the fire, saying they have not ruled out whether the fire was intentionally set.

No injuries were reported. Neighbors said the house has been empty since it was condemned following damage from storms earlier this month but investigators said one person remains unaccounted for.
