ALS, commonly known as Lou Geghrig’s Disease, is brutal.The mind stays intact as the body degenerates. There is no cure.
About 56-hundred Americans are diagnosed each year. Average life expectancy is just 2 to 5 years.
Governor Cellucci survived 2 and half years after announcing he had the disease. He dedicated that time to raising almost 2 million dollars for ALS Researchers at the UMass Medical School.
“The governor thought he could use the fact that he had this illness to support medical research and to support the medical school he loved so much,” said a Cellucci presser.
Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has also championed the push to find a cure. He wore the letters KALS: for “strick out” ALS.
The most famous living person with ALS is theoretical astrophysicist Stephen Hawking.
Last month the state senate voted to establish a public health ALS registry in Paul Cellucci’s name.
