BROCKTON, MASS. (WHDH) - A man was struck and killed by an SUV in Brockton on Wednesday as he was walking down the sidewalk.
A Mercedes SUV hit the man on the sidewalk at around 8 a.m. after the driver lost control behind Brockton District Court. When police arrived, they found a man on the sidewalk on West Elm Street, suffering from serious injuries.
He was transported to Brockton Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. He has since been identified as John Buckley, 66, of Bridgewater.
Police said preliminary findings show the car, a white Mercedes driven by a woman, may have been driven in reverse approximately 100 feet, driving over the curb of the parking spot, through a curbed driveway, up a grassy hill, through bushes over a sidewalk and across the street before coming to rest against a building. Police said the victim was dragged for several feet.
Police said the driver was extremely distraught and remained at the scene to speak with police. She requested medical attention and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. There is no word on whether the driver will face charges.
The crash remains under investigation.
