AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Authorities are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that struck a bus shelter in downtown Amherst and killed a 55-year-old man.

The victim of the crash at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday was identified Tuesday as William Wanczyk, of Northampton. He was taken to the hospital where he died. An autopsy is scheduled.

A spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney says a green truck without its headlights on was seen speeding down North Pleasant Street before it started to fishtail, drove onto the sidewalk, and struck the bus shelter.

The heavily damaged truck was found abandoned nearby, but the driver was nowhere to be found. The operator had not been found as of Tuesday afternoon.
