EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police say an argument over a woman has led to a stabbing in East Providence.

Kermit Fleming was charged with assault with intent to murder after the stabbing reported at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers responding to several 911 calls found the victim outside a city home with several stab wounds to his torso.

Fleming was identified by the victim and witnesses as the suspect, but he had already left the scene. Officers arrested the 48-year-old Fleming nearby.

Police say the altercation was over a “mutual female friend.”

The unnamed victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and stabilized.

It could not be determined if Fleming has a lawyer.
