The New England Police Benevolent Union endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Thursday.

The union unanimously voted to endorse Trump during an event in Portsmouth.

During the event, Trump called for the death penalty for anybody that kills a police officer.

NEBPA President Jerry Flynn defended the endorsement.

"This is not a religious thing. We all bleed blue," Flynn said.

The union said it invited every candidate but only Trump responded.

During the event, protesters denounced Trump for his recent controversial comments, including his plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States.

"I wouldn’t feel safe [if Trump became president]," said Aisha Eitahlawy, a Muslim.
