WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — What ended with Connecticut State Police fatally shooting a man in West Haven started with an attempted iPhone theft and a carjacking in Norwalk, police said Thursday.
The suspect, whose name has not been made public, was shot Wednesday night following a pursuit that reached 90 mph, authorities said.
The man walked into the AT&T store in Norwalk at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday with a knife in his hand and began to argue with employees, Norwalk police Lt. Jared Zwickler told The Hour.
The man tried unsuccessfully to steal an iPhone 11 before leaving the store and entering a ride-hailing service car outside the store.
The man demanded the driver’s cellphone and when the driver refused, slapped him and stole his vehicle, Zwickler said.
State police said the suspect was intentionally colliding with other cars on Interstate 95 while they were in pursuit. The chase ended with gunfire, including shots fired by police. The man was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died.
No troopers, other drivers or bystanders were hurt. The names of the troopers involved haven’t been released.
