NEW HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Police say they found malnourished dogs, cats, reptiles, rabbits and birds at the home of a couple who said they ran an animal rescue operation.
Police in New Hampton arrested 28-year-old Edith Daughen and 30-year-old Nicholas Torrey last week on 44 counts each of animal cruelty stemming from the discovery of the neglected animals in July. Police said a snake and bird were found dead, and many other animals had no food or water.
Many animals were taken to a rescue farm in Chichester. The Concord Monitor reports a frail horse was later euthanized.
The couple ran the White Gates Critter Sanctuary. They are scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 18. It wasn’t immediately known if they had lawyers, and a phone number couldn’t be found for them.
