PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Police are investigating after a dead cat was found hanging from a stop sign in Portland.

Lt. James Sweatt says the cat was reported to police around 6:20 a.m. Thursday after it was first spotted at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Johansen Street.

The feline, which had a white belly and tiger stripes on its back, was not wearing a collar and did not have a microchip. Police are hoping to locate its owner.

A preliminary investigation found that the cat was likely struck by a car based upon its injuries. It was then attached to the stop sign after it had already died.

Police say no charges are pending at this time but the case is both unusual and disturbing.
