WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island officials say an environmental police officer fired his weapon after he was hit and injured by a man on a dirt bike.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says the officer opened fire at Big River Management Area in West Greenwich on Saturday. No one was struck.
Environmental police say the officer was enforcing a ban on dirt bikes when he was hit.
Twenty-two-year-old Austin Dipeitro, of Coventry, is facing charges including assaulting a police officer. He was released on $2,000 bond. The case was not listed in online records and it’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
Two other men are also facing charges.
The officer was treated at a hospital and released.
Rhode Island State Police are investigating the gunfire.
