HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Authorities in Connecticut say an 11-year-old boy has been injured by a falling tree in a park.

Hartford police say the boy was playing basketball with other children in Goodwin Park Tuesday when the tree snapped and fell. The boy was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center where he’s listed in stable condition.

Authorities say the tree had been marked for removal.

Public works interim deputy director Michael Looney says once trees are marked there is a 10-day waiting period for public comment before they are removed. Looney says there are six trees in the area slated for removal.

Authorities say they take safety measures if a tree is a danger to the public. They say the trees currently marked for removal aren’t healthy.
