SUITLAND, Md. (AP) — An 11-year-old Maryland girl has been charged in the death of a 1-year-old boy in her care.

Prince George’s County Police Maj. Brian Reilly announced at a news conference Friday that the girl is charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of Paxton Davis of Washington, D.C.

Police say Paxton’s mother left him in the care of the girl’s relatives Saturday night and the girl’s mother left to run an errand Sunday morning, leaving the children alone. When family members returned, Reilly says they found the injured boy and called 911. The boy was taken to a hospital with severe injuries and died Thursday.

Reilly says when detectives interviewed the girl, she admitted assaulting Paxton.

The girl has been committed to a juvenile facility.
