AMESBURY, MASS. (WHDH) - Police are investigating after a fatal crash in Amesbury early Monday morning.

Just after 12 a.m., a Merrimac police officer on patrol on Rt. 1110 noticed a license plate light was out on a 2003 Honda Civic.

Amesbury Police were notified, as the car was headed into that town.

According to police, two minutes later  a Merrimac officer saw skid marks in the roadway and soon found the car had run off the road and crashed into a utility pole.

The driver, a man from Lawrence, was killed.

A front seat passenger, also a man from Lawrence, was partially ejected from the car and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Police determined the license plates on the car were stolen.
