ALFRED, Maine (AP) — State police in Maine are investigating the death of a woman found dead in jail Tuesday, the day after she was sentenced to 60 days in jail on charges of operating under the influence, officials said.

Kimberly Pierce, 35, of Waterboro, was found unresponsive Tuesday morning at the York County Jail in Alfred. Pierce was sentenced Monday to two-and-a-half years with all but 60 days suspended, York County Sheriff William King said in a news release.

Pierce’s death does not appear to have been a suicide, King said. Pierce’s cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner’s office, he said.

The Maine State Police’s major crimes unit is investigating Pierce’s death. She was sentenced on two separate charges of operating under the influence and other charges.
