FOXBOROUGH, MA (WHDH) – Police are investigating a crash in Plainville that left one wrong-way driver dead and another driver critically injured.

Plainville officials identified James Keating, 22 of Norton, as the wrong-way driver who was killed in the crash.  Keating was traveling northbound on the southbound side of Interstate 495 somewhere between exits 13 and 14 when he collided with another car around 2 a.m. Wednesday night.

The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old woman from Barnstable, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she remains in serious condition.

Police closed lanes on I-495 and investigated the scene for about three hours.

This is the second wrong-way crash on I-495. Five people were killed in a wrong-way crash in Marlborough on Oct. 15 when a driver was traveling southbound  in a northbound lane, north of Exit 3.

Several highway drivers agreed the entrance signs are clearly marked, but acknowledge that people still have trouble distinguishing which way to drive.

“When you drive here, it’s no joke. You better be wide awake, don’t drink, and if you’re not feeling well pull over,” said driver Ishmail Domench.

Officials continue to investigate where the driver entered the highway and what may have caused him to do so.
