BOURNE, MASS. (WHDH) - Police are investigating after a man drove through the gates of Camp Edwards on Joint Base Cape Cod early Monday morning.

Just before 2 a.m. Monday, State Police was contacted by Air Force security reporting a vehicle with Rhode Island license plates had failed to stop at the Bourne gate.

According to officials, the car sped off and turned down Estey Road, where it crashed into a pole.

Officials took Harold Lamotte, 31 of Charlestown, RI, into custody.

Lamotte was transported to Bourne State Police Barracks, where during the booking process he became combative and tried to escape custody.

He was charged with failure to stop, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, failure to stop for a police officer, speeding, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, trespassing and attempt to escape from jail.

Police said the motive for Lamotte’s actions is under investigation.

They said there is no information to indicate he is a threat to national security or has any connections to terrorism.

Bail was set at $25,000. He was transferred to the Barnstable House of Correction where he will be held until he posts bail or is arraigned Tuesday.
