PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police are investigating a shooting near a school bus that scared about 50 elementary school students and worried parents and school officials.
Authorities said the bus was bringing Carnevale Elementary School students home Thursday afternoon when several gunshots rang out at Alverson and Hartford avenues. School officials said the bus driver told students to get on the floor and drove away from the scene. No injuries were reported.
City police did not confirm details of the shooting until Saturday. Michael Correia, the City Council president pro tempore, said in a statement that he didn’t hear anything about the incident until Saturday when he read about it on social media.
Police Chief Hugh Clements said the school bus was not the target of the gunshots. No arrests have been made.
School and bus company officials said the bus driver acted appropriately and police were notified after the children on the bus were dropped off at their homes. School officials also said parents were notified and social workers were made available to students who needed them.
