A Weymouth man was arrested after police said he hit a pedestrian while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The crash happened in front of Monahan’s Marine on Washington Street/Route 53 at around 12:15 p.m. Peter Monahan said one of his employees was pulling out of the parking lot and saw a van barreling down the breakdown lane.

"He tried to put it in reverse but he got it," said Monahan. Police said the crash sent one of the vehicles into a 39-year-old man who was walking by. The man was taken to South Shore Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver of the van, 51-year-old Thomas Mahon, caused the chain reaction crash. During a sobriety test, he allegedly fell face-first to the ground.

"The man was obviously intoxicated," said Monahan.

Mahon and the other driver were also taken to the hospital, where Mahon was arrested. He now faces multiple charges, including OUI.
