HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A man was shot outside the Catholic Academy of New Haven Monday morning and a bullet struck a classroom with 11 children inside, but the kids were not hurt, according to New Haven Police.

The man was shot several times, but his injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Police responded to reports of a shooting near Fountain Street and Alden Avenue.

The man was targeted outside the school after he dropped off a child, officials said. They said the man was a caregiver for the child’s mother. One bullet went into a classroom with 11 students, but no one inside the classroom was hit and there were no children outside of the school at the time, said Assistant Police Chief Renee Dominguez.

The man’s name was not immediately released by police.

“For the individuals who shot him, they had no regard for the school that was being brought into session at almost 9 o’clock in the morning, where clearly if this individual is dropping off his children, other people are dropping off their children,” Dominguez said outside the school. “Innocent children and the community was put in danger here.”

The nearby Mauro-Sheridan Interdistrict Magnet School on Fountain Street was locked down due to police activity, according to New Haven Public Schools, WFSB-TV reported.
