Authorities say a man wanted for a kidnapping and murder in Richmond, Virginia shot himself on Wednesday inside a Fitchburg home and later died.

Police said Dana William was in critical condition on Wednesday. On Friday, William died, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities say they had been searching for William since the violent incident in Virginia last week. On Jan. 22, authorities in Virginia found 67-year-old Woddel Brooks bound to a chair and strangled to death. Brooks’s wife, Olene, had been kidnapped and is still missing.

Police say William previously dated the Brooks’ daughter.

The victim’s family says the motive was revenge.

Police in Massachusetts received a warning William may come to Fitchburg. Authorities say a Fitchburg officer spotted a van William was driving on Tuesday night.

William had allegedly stolen the van from the couple.

The district attorney in Massachusetts says William shot himself in the head as police closed in on the home on Wednesday morning.

William had been staying with a woman on the bottom floor of a home. The woman apparently did not know he had allegedly been involved in the Virginia incident.

William was released from prison in Virginia last summer after serving a sentence for a rape conviction.
