A Massachusetts man is behind bars in Virginia after police say he choked an Uber driver on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield.

Media outlets report 22-year-old Maxwell Sweeney of Mansfield, Massachusetts, is charged with strangling another causing wounding or injury, and vandalism to a vehicle.

Virginia State Police say Sweeney was one of two passengers the driver picked up in Richmond. While traveling on I-95, the driver was told to return to Richmond for another fare.

Police say on the way back, Sweeney reached up from the back seat and began choking the driver, who pulled over. Police say Sweeney fled. The other passenger remained at the scene.

The driver didn’t need medical treatment, but police say there were signs of an assault.

It isn’t clear if Sweeney has an attorney.
