EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police are investigating after what are believed to be human remains were found near a road inside a retirement community in East Lyme.

Local police responded to a report of a suspicious item just before 7 a.m. Monday near Sleepy Hollow Road inside Sleepy Hollow Hills, a retirement community in the village of Niantic.

Officers found the remains and notified the State Police Major Crime Squad, which is now leading the investigation.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the remains or how long they may have been there.

No further details were released.
