NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a 65-year-old man who was arrested for subway fare-beating in New York City was wanted for a 1990 shooting in Massachusetts.

Police say Officer Jorge Roca noticed Anibal Vargas manipulating a turnstile at a Manhattan subway station on Thursday and stopped him.

They say Roca asked Vargas for identification and Vargas produced a counterfeit New York driver’s license.

The NYPD says a preliminary investigation found that Vargas was wanted for attempted murder for a shooting on Aug. 26, 1990 in Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Police say Vargas shot two people at a house party and had been a fugitive ever since.

It wasn’t clear if Vargas had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
