WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) — Worcester police said Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s body will be moved in the coming days, but to where is still unknown.
“I’m not going to get into the specifics of where at this time because there’s still so many options on the table, but I just can say this, that [the funeral home director has] made several calls to many places and he’s trying to get some cooperation,” said Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst of the Worcester police department.
The funeral home director of the Worcester funeral home where Tsarnaev’s body remains said more than 100 people in the United States and Canada have offered burial plots, but officials in those cities and towns said no.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is also weighing in on the burial of the alleged terrorist.
“I wouldn’t allow him to be buried in a city cemetery, that’s for sure,” said Menino. “He’s not from Boston, he’s from someplace else, and he needs to go back to his homeland.”
Tsarnaev’s mother has said she wants her son’s body to be buried in Dagestan, but Russia isn’t allowing her to bring the body into the country.
The founder of an organization that built Colorado’s largest mosque is offering to bury Tsarnaev in a Denver-area Muslim cemetery. He said he would pay for a traditional Muslim burial with no headstone, no monument and no casket, as long as the family can get the body to Denver.
Menino said his focus isn’t on the suspects at this point, it’s on the survivors.
