GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — Police are warning married men in Connecticut to watch out for blackmail letters from scammers demanding $2,000.
Greenwich Lt. John Slusarz says his department has seen five such letters in which the scammer threatens to reveal that the recipient has been unfaithful unless they pay the money.
The Greenwich Time reports that the scam has been around for ages, and the easiest solution is to ignore the letter and throw it away.
The latest scam uses a form letter, using real names obtained through mailing lists. Police say the letters appear to be the work of amateurs, given that the language is stilted and the first names used in the letters are often bungled.
Police say they’ve notified postal authorities.
