The prosecution has rested in the trial of a man charged with raping and killing a University of New Hampshire college student.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Seth Mazzaglia choked 19-year-old Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott of Westborough, Massachusetts, on Oct. 9, 2012, after she twice rejected his sexual advances.

His ex-girlfriend, Kathryn McDonough, testified that Mazzaglia wanted her to recruit a woman into their sex life, which included bondage and discipline. She brought Marriott over and said a game of strip poker led to Mazzaglia’s advances and ultimately, Marriott’s death.

Mazzaglia is charged with first-degree murder. McDonough has pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and is serving 1 1/2 to three years in prison.

Mazzaglia’s lawyers say McDonough is lying and that Marriott died while the two women were engaged in rough sex involving restraints.

The trial will resume Monday.
