COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Prosecutors say a South Carolina man set his girlfriend’s puppy on fire and killed it because he was angry at the woman.

Multiple media outlets report the motive for killing the 10-week-old pit bull puppy last weekend was given at a bond hearing Tuesday for 21-year-old Hykeem Golson.

Deputies found the 10-week-old pit bull puppy suffering from burns Saturday night in a church parking lot near Irmo, about 12 miles northwest of Columbia, after a witness called 911 and said the animal was set on fire.

The puppy was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, but died from its injuries.

Golson is charged with ill treatment of animals and his bond was set at $10,000. A judge also ruled he should get a public defender.

Golson faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
