BOSTON (WHDH) - Officers in Massachusetts will soon be able to place people who are in the middle of a drug overdose into protective custody, even without receiving consent.

A person placed in involuntary custody is not considered to be under arrest. Instead, the person would be taken to the hospital to receive immediate treatment.

Supporters hope this will reduce the number of deaths linked to overdoses.
