PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — City councilors in Providence want to stop large trucks from taking up space on neighborhood streets.

A proposed ordinance introduced recently would limit how long commercial vehicles can park on streets or in front yards. It was introduced by President Pro Tempore Michael Correia and Councilors Pedro Espinal and James E. Taylor.

Matos said she’s constantly hearing from frustrated residents about large commercial trucks parked on their street. It is a safety issue because parked trucks can prevent people from being able to see clearly while backing out of a driveway, she said.

Under the ordinance, no vehicles more than 20-feet in length and more than 6,500 pounds would be able to park for more than a hour between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. or at any time of the day on Sunday on streets in Providence unless they are loading or off-loading materials.
