A Providence fire captain is in critical condition and at least 12 firefighters were injured while battling flames and strong winds at an apartment building Thursday afternoon.

High winds fanned the flames and fire crews were unable to contain it before it spread to at least two neighboring homes on Eaton Street.

Firemen in ladder trucks and on the ground poured water on the triple decker and homes next door.

Thick smoked filled the sky as water doused the flames.

Most of the injuries were minor, but the fire captain was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
