MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A Manchester restaurant is among six recipients of a national award for regional establishments.

The Puritan Backroom is being given an America’s Classic Award by the James Beard Foundation. The award recognizes regional restaurants, often family-owned, known for quality food, local character and lasting appeal.

The restaurant got its start as an ice cream shop called the Puritan Confectionery Company in 1917 and became the Puritan Backroom in 1974. One of its current owners is Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, and it has become a popular campaign trail stop for politicians.
