BOSTON (WHDH) - Members of the British royal family came together in Scotland shortly before the Queen’s death Thursday, gathering amid years of speculation about a royal rift between members of the family.
Queen Elizabeth’s grandchildren, Prince William, who is now second in line to the throne after the newly crowned King Charles III, and his younger brother Prince Harry are spending their first extended time together in over two years as the family mourns. Their wives are staying behind.
Harry and his wife Meghan Markle stepped away from their royal duties in January 2020, citing mistreatment from other members of the royal family, including racist comments from the media and other members of the family. They moved to California and became financially independent.
Markle is also rumored to have a frosty relationship with William’s wife, Kate Middleton, whom Markle said made her cry before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry over a dress disagreement.
The drama had been heavily reported, especially after the couple had a bombshell tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. She told Winfrey that she contemplated suicide, and that a senior member of the royal family discouraged her from getting help.
