SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) — A Revere police officer was taken to the hospital after an allegedly drunken driver struck his cruiser in a work zone on U.S. Route 1 in Saugus.
Authorities say 43-year-old Denny Miller, of Newburyport, “ignored all warning signs, arrow boards, and police lights warning him to move over” and rear-ended the cruiser in the northbound lanes early Thursday morning.
The cruiser was on a pothole repair detail in the right travel lane.
The injured officer, whose name was not made public, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with what were described as minor injuries.
The cruiser was totaled.
Police say Miller, who has a prior drunken driving conviction in Ohio, was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer.
Suspect said he was coming from Red Sox game and had about four beers and fell asleep at the wheel.
