Right whale spotted in the waters off of Nahant

A right whale was spotted off the shores of Nahant Tuesday afternoon.

The whale is endangered and was seen swimming through the waters throughout the afternoon. Neighbors in the area said they were surprised by the sight. The whale was only about a mile off shore from the farthest tip of Nahant.

A whale expert from the New England Aquarium said the animal is an endangered North Atlantic right whale, the most endangered right whale in the Atlantic. There are only about 500 in existence.

Experts said it was an adult whale that weighs between 50 and 70 tons, but would need to take a better look at the video to determine what gender it is. The expert believes the whale came up from Cape Cod.
