An allegedly distracted driver is being blamed for a car crash that sent two police dogs to the emergency room.
Rockland police say they were serving an arrest warrant around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they heard a loud crash.
They turned around and saw that an SUV had crashed into their cruisers.
“When I heard the impact I immediately knew the car had been struck, we rendered first aid to the operator then went right to the K9s. Immediately knew that K9 Boyar was hurt, he was bleeding profusely from the head,” Rockland Police Officer Steve Somers said.
The dogs are expected to be OK, but it was a scary night for the police department.
“These dogs are 10 years old, they’ve been out working the streets, they’ve worked hard for a long time, put a lot of effort in. They’re getting older so they’re more susceptible to an injury like this,” Rockland Police Chief John Llewellyn said.
The dogs will be back on duty soon and are expected to retire next year.
